Leadership Gadsden graduates first class
The first class of Leadership Gadsden Academy graduated last Friday night. Max Martinez was the sponsor of the first class and spoke about the purpose of the academy was to create new leaders. Martinez challenged the graduating class to “go out and help make other leaders.” “I want to thank all of you for stepping up and being the first class of Leadership Gadsden,” said class president James Maloy.

PAMS revived by health dept.
The Gadsden County Community Health Council, Inc. has revived the Prescription Assistance Medical Services (PAMS) program. Originally established in 2004, it has found new supporters such as the Gadsden County Health Department and Big Bend Rural Health Network. They are coupled with the efforts of local physicians, the Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners, Maximo Martinez, who is the executive director the Gadsden County Community Health Council, Inc., and former state representative Curtis Richardson.

County agrees to fund PAMS program
he Prescription Assistance Medical Services program (PAMS) in Gadsden County will continue. PAMS, which helps provide free prescription drugs to those without insurance or access to government assistance, received funding by the county commission Tuesday. Howard McKinnon, chairman of the Gadsden County Health Council, a watchdog group established to oversee grant programs in the county, spoke to the commission concerning the financial status of the program.

Gadsden prescription program receives funding
About one in every three people in Gadsden County are without health insurance and should they need medications, they may not be able to afford them.
The PAMS or Prescription Assistance Medical Services program, has become vital for hundreds of Gadsden County residents.
Under insured or those without insurance can go through a short application process. Once accepted, PAMS matches their prescription needs with pharmaceutical companies that offer the drug for free.

Experts discuss infant mortality rate
The Gadsden County Community Health Council heard state experts
report statistics and causes of infant mortality and premature
births last week. State maternal and child health epidemiologist
Dr. William Sappenfield, Amy Cober, director of the Florida Office
of Minority Health, and FSU consultant on infant, maternal and
reproductive health Cheryl Clark offered trends and disparities
of infant mortality in Florida and Gadsden County as well as
racial and ethnic health disparities.

Health talk TV show to air locally
A monthly talk show about Gadsden County's health issues will
soon air on local cable stations.
The hour long show hosted by Gadsden County Community Health
Council (GCCHC) executive director Max Martinez will be shown
immediately after each county commission meeting.

Con. Boyd secures funding for prescription drug assistance
in Gadsden County
WASHINGTON, D.C.-Congressman Allen Boyd (D-North Florida), a
member of the House Appropriations Committee, has secured $100,000
in federal funding to provide prescription drug assistance to
low income residents in Gadsden County. This funding was included
in the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations
Act (HR 3043) for Fiscal Year 2008, which passed last week in
the House of Representatives, and it will be administered under
Gadsden Health Council's Prescription Assistance Medical Services
(PAMS) Program.

Health council receives $7,000 check from United Way
The Big Bend United Way presented the Gadsden County Community
Health Council with a check for $7,000 last week.
The money will be used to help fund the. "Whole Child" project
in Gadsden County sponsored by the Lawton Chiles Foundation.
